Plantation Shutters UK
We have noticed a large increase of interest in plantation shutters in the UK. While most of our work is done in
Berkshire, Surrey and Oxfordshire we are increasingly going further afield to fit plantation shutters. The main
reason for this is that we supply shaped shutters and do what we call "specials"
By "specials" we mean difficult to nigh on impossible windows that are unusual shapes and in difficult to reach
locations. For instance we fitted 5 shutters to a property that had 2 arched shutters, 2 Triangle Shutters and a
round shutter. The round shutter was four and a half metres up above the arched shutters. See
photo.
Plantation shutters have usually been seen in the U.S.A and in mainland europe. But it looks like the UK is fast
catching up with wooden shutters as a superb type of window dressing. The main features apart from the look of wood
shutters is the high degree of control you have over light and privacy. The slats can be tilted up or down and
close quite tightly to give good light reduction when needed. They also are hung on hinges which means they open
and fold back letting you retain an open feel to your room when you need it.
One popular application is cafe style plantation shutters. These cover only the bottom half of the window
allowing lots of light to enter at the top of the window. These always look good in the kitchen window at the front
of the house.
